Installation of SecuritySpy on a second/third computer

edited January 2017 in SecuritySpy
Hi
To setup SecuritySpy on another computer, am I understanding correctly that I should install the 30 day trial which will then become view only after the time period? The original installation was not done by me and I am upgrading from version 2 to 4. By installing ver4 will it automatically install the settings form the earlier version? I understand that this happens with the registered software on the main server computer but wondered if it would be the same for the other viewing computers.

[NOTE Aug 2024: this info is a bit out of date - see my more recent post below]

If you want to use SecuritySpy for viewing only (e.g. just to display live video from your cameras) then you can do so without purchasing an additional license: simply use the software in trial mode and after 30 days it will switch to viewing-only mode.

For your main recording Mac, the new version of SecuritySpy will pick up all the settings from the previous one.

For the viewing-only Macs, you have two options: you can either set up the cameras manually, or you can follow this FAQ to copy the settings from your main recording Mac:

How do I move SecuritySpy from one computer to another, retaining all settings?
  • Many thanks for making the installation clearer
  • I am trying to view cameras on a second installation, the cameras initially show up on my screen but then after a couple of seconds go away and "trial expired" is shown.

Are we still able to use a second installation on a second computer to view cameras?

  • If the Mac you want to view your feeds on has an M1 or later chip, I've found the simplest option is to just load the iPad app onto that Mac from the Mac App Store

  • Appreciate it. My laptop doesn't have an M1 or later chip unfortunately.

  • I just used VNC to connect to my computer running SecuritySpy and monitor it from my laptop that way. Would rather use the iOS app but it rarely connects to the server for some reason and isn't reliable for me.

  • Yes, it is still possible to use additional (free, unlicensed) instances of SecuritySpy on other Macs for the purpose of viewing your main (paid, registered) SecuritySpy server. Just make sure these viewing instances are configured to pull the feeds from the server, not directly from the cameras themselves. Instructions are here: SecuritySpy as Remote Viewing Software.

    Alternatives to this are:

    • Purchase a 1-camera license of SecuritySpy for the viewing Mac. The first camera will operate fully, and subsequent cameras will operate in view-only mode. This allows you to pull the feeds directly from the IP cameras, reducing load on your server.
    • Use our ViewCam software, which is designed for this purpose (basically a slimmed-down version of SecuritySpy for live viewing).
    • If the viewing Mac has an Apple Silicon chip, you can use the SecuritySpy iOS app.
    • Use the web interface in any web browser (Safari, Chrome etc.)

Thanks Ben, adding the cameras via the server worked great.

  • Also, Bonjour has made the app work much better as well.
