I understand that WiFi is not ideal in terms of reliability for a SecuritySpy cam network...but also am not able to install CAT cable to cover a 2 acre property, so set up an eero mesh system.

I ended up with 7 cams and 8 eeros (1 hub, 7 distributed for best cam coverage.

When all the cams are connected to the closest eero, everything works fine, all 7 cams hum along with 10/10 FPS and provide nice, smooth video recordings.

If something happens to disturb a particular Cam/WiFi connection, the cam will automatically hop over to the next best WiFi connection. In most cases, that results in the frame rate dropping and the recording becoming jerky or dropping out altogether.

Unfortunately, when the preferred eero connection becomes available again, the cam does not automatically re-connect to the preferred eero, it keeps the connection with the less-than-optimal one it has switched to.

With 7 cams, one or the other of them goes to the "wrong" eero daily, or more often.

The fix is to re-boot the camera, which then re-establishes its connection with the eero providing the best signal. It gets tedious having to monitor the system for drop-offs, and then re-boot the camera to fix it.

I opened a support case with eero, asking if there's a way to assign a cam's MAC address to a particular eero.

While searching eero's website, I found a 6 year old discussion on this topic, and it appears I'm not the only one asking about it.

Unfortunately, in the 6 years that have elapsed since people first started asking about it, eero seems no closer to a solution now than they were back then.

I bring it up here just to let people know. I believe there are other WiFi solutions that provide this functionality, but will have to do more research before I can say how well they work.

Anyone else using WiFi for SS, please feel free to comment on your experience.

However I have always used an IT company for set up and I just do the wiring and positioning. Long story short, I had an install and didn't use the IT company (for client reasons), and any motion bogs down the network. Using the newest Mac Mini and 5 qty 5MP Anpviz cameras. Set frame rate to 10 fps. When I monitor the Mac Mini on the network, motion on the cameras shows high upload data (50kbps when no motion to 60Mbps when motion occurs). What changes should I make to correct this issue?

I decided to add a 50" 4K TV to the system so I could see the views from all the cams better.

The 2014 i7 Mac Mini seems unable to push the data to the TV through an HDMI cable.

With the Dell 19" monitor, it worked fine, and it initially worked OK with the LG 50" screen, I think when it did its overnight reboot, it detected the 4K screen at the other end, and changed something to try to accommodate it, but the LG now says no signal detected.

That's problem 1. I verified the HDMI cable is OK, my 2020 M1 MacBook Air is able to send video through it to the LG.

I thought I'd work around that by just keeping the Dell 19" monitor on the Mini for admin use, and view the cameras on the LG by using the Apple TV App on an an Apple TV 4K.

Problem 2 is that the Apple TV app seems to be slightly zooming the views, which crops the minute and seconds digits of the camera times off the right top of the frame, which is not ideal. The frame rates are also not visible. Without frame rates or seconds ticking off, it's hard to know if I'm looking at a freeze-frame or a live view. I went all through the LG settings, tried all the aspect ratios and zoom settings, but it looks like the slightly zoomed views are being sent by the Apple TV app, and I can't unzoom them on the LG.

Problem 3...I purchased the Multiplex option from the app, thinking it would display the views in a similar way the Mac app does. On the Mac I have 7 cams, with the 3 main ones each taking up 1/4 of the entire screen, and the remaining 4 cams in the remaining 1/4 of the screen. I don't see a way to do that in the TV app multiplex view. With 7 cameras, the multiplex displays 6 of them, and moves them every 10 seconds or so, which is not ideal for how I'd prefer to view them. As a temporary fix, I took one of the cameras offline, which stops the scrolling, but I can't monitor that camera now.

I do intend to get a new Mac Mini, but it's been 2 years now since the first M1 Mini was released and I wanted to wait for the M1 Pro or M2 Mini before buying one.

I'm pretty sure with a new Mini, it will work just the way it was working, but meanwhile, I'm trying to do the best I can with what I have.

Any help or suggestions on solving or working around any of the above will be appreciated.

Hello, all. I'm hoping those with network experience might be able to assist. We've had SecuritySpy in place for 10+ years. We have a dozen cameras, eleven hardwired with ethernet. The router is an Apple Time Capsule. In general, the installation has been very predictable and reliable.

About four months ago an intermittent problem emerged. After the holiday break and seemingly without a revision or addition to the network, eight or nine cameras occasionally go offline. When the cameras go off-line in SS, you cannot reach the cameras by IP address on the network, nor do they show up in Network Device Finder. We restart the router, restart the SS computer, all cameras appear again for a period of time. All cameras might work for ten minutes or for two weeks. Then the problem starts again.

We tried replacing the router with a different Apple Time Capsule- no change. In SS>Preferences>Cameras>Device>Auto-Discovered Devices dropdown menu, we sometimes see two cameras with self-assigned IP addresses and, even so, those cameras are sometimes visible in SS.

The network was expanded over years with a number of ethernet switches. I suspect a networking fault, a miswired connector, or a backlooped ethernet connection. It's odd how the problem comes and goes. When we're having "camera troubles" we also experience general network troubles, such as remote connections to the SecuritySpy server Mac Pro connects, drops, and reconnects.

My thought is to disassemble all network ethernet connections and extensions and add them back one at a time. Below a couple screen shots.

Subnets: https://www.dropbox.com/s/094dbovi7g32s2p/subnet.png?dl=0

Given what I've described, any feedback as to what might be the cause? Thanks so much for your attention. Stay well.

To test the cam i installed V380 app in my droid phone and to use the cam with phone, at first in phone wifi setup screen i connect the phone to cam ( MV14380381 ) so i open the v380 app and connect with repeater and all work fine.
So install a v380 software windows version in my PC and no way to make the cam works, in win V380 i tried add manualy with cam ID but not work cause cam is connected to repeater and my PC connected by wire to my main router.

I integrate SS with Indigo (indigodomotics.com) for home automation purposes, and I wish to continue this.

Question: Generally speaking, or even specifically, how does one integrate a freestanding NVR with the imac hosting SS? The NVR I am strongly considering is the Amcrest 4108E (supplies power over ethernet).

Many thanks,

I'm interested in installing a dome type WIFI cam ( like this: https://www.amazon.com/Amcrest-Outdoor-3-Megapixel-Vandal-Security/dp/B01L9SHSRE/ ) in a porch-like outdoor location, in the ceiling, well protected from weather. I don't want to go the POE route for both (ease of) wiring and security considerations.

The problem I think I'm going to run into is that the wall-wart transformer looks pretty big for this unit, and I was hoping to find an electrical box that would recess enough to fit the transformer and allow the cam to flush mount to the wood ceiling. These look too small ( https://www.amazon.com/Leviton-689-W-Recessed-Receptacle-Residential/dp/B0012DKBL2/ ). I could fabricate a spacer if I needed more depth, but the transformer will probably need more width and height. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this sort of install. Many thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hi, I'm in my eval period with SS. The SW is woking great on the computer running SS but that computer is not colocated with my TV. Right now, if I get a motion detection my home automation SW switches my TV's receiver to an HDMI port which should be showing me the live camera input.

I have very little room left in my AV area so I have tried a tiny Rasberry Pi solution to get the video displayed on the TV reliably. I have not had much luck with Pi running a web server pointed that the SS camera page.

When the HDMI switch happens the page is always there but usually (after some time) the image is no longer refreshing. I can reload the page and it starts working but I'm looking for something that I don't need to futz with to get a quick look at the camera image on my TV automatically. This may be an issue with the Pi but I don't have much room and a full-size computer seems overkill.

I was wondering what others are doing to create an HDMI signal that is always showing a camera image - I thought this would be easy but it is turning out to be just the opposite.

I am new to SS (tryout phase) but I am no native speaker so I have some problems to understand the installation...
I have set up all cameras in the setup section. They show videos in their pictures. But if they are armed they don't send an E-mail with pictures, if someone is walking into the rooms. Seems that the cams are uploading videos to the ftp-server, but no E-Mails. E-Mail test was successful. Where I have to switch the settings to get E-Mails? In the actions?

The Security Spy works great. Have ver 3.1.1. The built in web server works great. Able to view on my mac's, PC and my Iphone and Ipad. When I use Remote Patrol, it works great if I have the WiFi feature turned "on" on my Iphone. Remote Patrol finds everything OK and it works great. The problem is when I turn off the WiFi feature on my Iphone and just use the cell network, it does not connect. This is strange because it works great with the built in Security Spy web server using the Iphone browser on the cell network. So I would assume that the port forwarding was set up correctly.
Any suggestions?

Hello, My network started crawling a few months so I disconnected the cameras and all is well. I now want to get the cameras back up but I dont want the network to slow due to video being captured. I have a pretty fast internet and was capturing on my main mac. I now have a dedicated mac that I can use, I also have a mac mini server that may work even better. Can someone advise me on a setup that will not affect my network.

I have two airports, a MicroTik RouterBoard, and a TP-Link POE amd 4 axis cameras, and a mac mini server. I am not a networking guy nor do I play one on TV so I am at a loss on a best practice. Anyone with some great ideas who can advise me on a great setup I will greatly appreciate it

apologies for the simple question... my Mac Mini is connected to a wireless network. the five IP cameras (Dahua IPC-HFW4300S 3MP) are attached to a PoE switch, which is connected to the Mac Mini via ethernet. In order to connect to the cameras, i have set the Ethernet port to manual on the same subnet as the wifi (IP address 192.168.1.120). in order to see the cameras on start up, i have to turn wifi off. if wifi is on during start up, then the cameras are not visible. i have to turn wifi off, connect via browser to their IP, get them working, then i can turn wifi on. i suspect my settings are not correct. would you be able to post instructions for network connection with a mac connected to the wifi, but cameras connected to ethernet? thanks in advance. love your product and all your feedback...

Hi All,

I've got a requirement where I need 2-4 cameras each at 6 of our branches. I'm waiting for a couple quotes back from professional security companies but after a couple discussions I'm failing to see the benefits compared to my idea. I was wondering if anyone could point out issues with my idea below.

I was thinking of having a Mac Mini running at each branch running a copy of SecuritySpy with the IP cameras streaming to the mac mini. Then with a frequent copy via FTP back to our data centre every 15 minutes or so. If we ever need to view footage we either remotely connect to SecuritySpy or go directly to the captured footage.

I'm one of our companies Network Engineers, and have the IP all sorted. In regards to Camera's I was thinking either Axis or Mobotix but can decide later down the track. I dont want to run each camera streaming back over the WAN links as I believe this would be inefficient and would compete with business traffic traversing the link.

One of the sales guys from the security company was trying to sell me the idea that there is more redundancy in their DVRs as they run RAID with AV grade hard drives, but the Mac mini is simply a relay point to our redundant data centre.

Our PoE switches at the branches are all Cisco 2960's

My only question at this stage, does SecuritySpy compress the stored footage? IE before its then uploaded via FTP?

Thanks,
Ben
