I have set up the home assistant integration, and it works like a charm. However, I am trying to set up a trigger to turn the light on when there is motion on a camera, and off again when there is not. In HomeHelper I have light set to turn on, and reset to off after 5 minutes. The home action on my camera is set to turn on the light. What actually happens is that I assume a motion is detected, the light goes on, a few seconds later it goes off, then almost immediately it goes back on, since the motion is fairly continuous.

So it's detecting the motion and turning the light on correctly, but I'm not sure why it goes off almost immediately. Please let me know if I'm configuring it incorrectly.

First, I want to be clear that what I'm talking about isn't the brand-new addition Home Helper got with Security Spy 6.18, I just happened to have good timing! My HomeKit setup has been less than reliable at communicating with Home Helper (I have an older Apple TV running it) and I'm a Home Assistant user anyway, so I decided to explore Bjarne Riis' old HA Integration last weekend, and with a lot of prodding to Claude Code managed to get it working again, and added the schedule presets as a dropdown menu. One of the best uses I've gotten out of it so far is to make an automation check to make sure the "Actions" toggle actually switched when I selected the schedule preset. This could also really be handy if you wanted to directly control Security Spy's "Actions" or "Motion Capture" setting directly from something in Home Assistant. So here it is in case anyone else can make use of it.

https://github.com/JoshADC/securityspy

I know HomeKit is just starting to come to some acceptable level of maturity, but was curious if anyone knows if Apple has talked about any future capability for Mac software (I'm of course thinking specifically of SecuritySpy) to become any kind of official provider for HomeKit. I haven't heard anything like that yet myself, but it could open some possibilities.

Minus that, does anyone know of any good way to use HomeBridge with SecuritySpy in any manner? Or might Ben at some point consider making a HomeBridge plugin?

Ultimately, I'd love to expose the cameras motion sensors to HomeKit so I could use those as triggers to do other things (i.e. something triggers the motion detector in the backyard at night, turn on the outdoor lights for 10 minutes). I have a ton of HomeKit lights and other things so I've already invested a lot in HomeKit and at this point am only interested in trying to somehow bridge HomeKit and SecuritySpy rather than switch to another ecosystem.

Thanks for any pointers, particularly with HomeBridge. I've seen there are different plugins for HomeBridge for several camera manufacturers but I own 3 brands of IP cameras and they do not all have HomeBridge plugins. So I think the best bet would probably be to "bridge" SecuritySpy itself so that I can utilize the feeds and (maybe/hopefully) the motion detection for HomeKit use.

This isn't directly related to SecuritySpy, although if I can get this question figured out I will be upgrading my license yet again as I will be purchasing a half dozen or more cameras. Otherwise I will be transitioning away from this architecture.

I have a Dahua camera, attempt at getting support from the guy who sold me the cameras was unfruitful (he said he would help then ghosted me), and was not helpful from the company forum (resulted in my question being hidden on their forum). Other forum attempts have not provided any info. So this is my last post and I'm hoping somebody here can help me, else I'm going to be ditching these PTZ cameras and just going with lower quality Pi cameras for my application. The camera in question:

I have two questions.

Question One:

Why is that using this API, I am able to successfully send HTTP Requests to make the camera pan up, pan down, and stop but every other command gives me a 501 error?

I can get up and down to work using this format:

http://192.168.132.117/cgi-bin/ptz.cgi?action=start&channel=0&code=Up&arg1=0&arg2=1&arg3=0

which works and returns <Response [200]>

Similarly down works with:

http://192.168.132.117/cgi-bin/ptz.cgi?action=start&channel=0&code=Down&arg1=0&arg2=1&arg3=0

and returns <Response [200]>

But despite using the Armcrest HTTP API document (and this API doc from Empire Tech which has the same commands), I can't get left, right, zoom, goto_preset or any other commands to work:

http://192.168.132.117/cgi-bin/ptz.cgi&action=start&channel=0&code=Left&arg1=0&arg2=0&arg3=0

<Response [501]>

** this doesn't change even if I pass a number 1-8 to arg2

I used AI to come up with hundreds of possible commands for pan left in case code=Left wasn't the correct one, and NONE of them worked.

Question Two:

Is the secret here that these companies don't want average users using HTTP Requests or ONVIF for their cameras despite advertising these capabilities? Are companies like Blue Iris paying Dahua for an accurate API so they can develop?

Many thanks for any generous help with this last ditch effort to use these cameras.

I'm using a new plugin for Indigo that supports Security Spy. The plugin exposes a flag for the start of an event recording, but I don't see a flag for the end of an event recording.

I use the interface to turn lights on and off within the camera's field of vision. When the lights turn off, it triggers a false event, so the lights just keep going on and off. I've tried using Indigo variables to some success to create a window where the event triggers are ignored, but given that the event recordings are variable in length, it's not that precise. If there were an event flag for end of recording, that would solve my issue. I have tried using the AI (person, animal, vehicle) triggers, but they still trigger on the lights (on/off). Other ideas welcome. Thanks.

Cats are especially troublesome as there is a feral cat factory a couple of blocks away. To help deal with this onslaught, I tweaked the SS actions, for AI animal detection, to throw events for animal motion detected at night. It tried attaching videos, with audio, as a .zip but no success.

Notes

I installed an $29 bluetooth outdoor speaker to the side of the house and paired it with a Mac Mini running SS. In the actions I selected custom audio with a loud dog barking for 2 cams.

For the driveway I installed a TP Link smart plug and joined it to HomeKit via a Hubitat C8 Pro (I believe TP Link also makes a plug for HomeKit native). I paired the smart plug to HomeKit and used HomeHelper to set up a new action. I chose this action from the SS actions menu. I connected the vac pipe to the vac exhaust to also blow air in addition to an uproarious noise when it switches on.

For both cams, the barking dog audio is played for about 10 seconds

For the driveway, the vacuum is turned on for 10 seconds. You can see it, covered with a white plastic bag, at the corner of the garage.

I'm using the new Amcrest panoramic cam for the driveway. I am able to ping the MAC that the SS is installed on from the HA environment. The HA machine is on the NON-Camera LAN (the public/Internet LAN).

Any help would be great!!

I have asked for this feature before, and you decided not to implement it. Since that time, my need for the feature has continued to expand. So, I am asking you to reconsider implementing it.

Feature: Add option to execute arbitrary server action from contextual menu on image display. The most flexible option would be to execute a pre-defined SecuritySpy action, or a shell script. This could be done by right clicking on the image and selecting the script, or a run script option, from the contextual menu. The action or shell script could then use shell programming, osascript, python, expect, etc.

These are my current use cases. Each one is associated with a camera with a view of the area where I would like the action to take place:

open a gate at the entrance to our property

open or close the door to a chicken coop

turn on/off a light inside the chicken coop

turn on/off the garden lights

turn on/off the pool lights

Thank you for considering this.

I can't really block it off as an ignore zone because everything I WOULD want to capture is between the camera and that massive window.

So I would love to set up a PIR motion sensor which can't see through glass and have THAT trigger recording instead.
Home Assistant is a smart things hub for everything. For people asking for homekit support Home Assistant is the way to go.

I would love to be able to use SS with Home Assistant.

Here is a list of support systems. https://www.home-assistant.io/components/#camera

I tried using - https://www.home-assistant.io/components/camera.generic/ and https://www.home-assistant.io/components/camera.mjpeg/

Issue here was the fact I am using H.246 and I don't want to stop using it.

Ben, am I able to stream from SS to Home Assistant?

Side note... Home Assistant is amazing and has a great community. I know if you built a plugin for it you would sell a heaps of SS to the community! You would also then have the benefit of all the other amazing thing people could do with SS using Home Assistant!!

Hi Ben,

I'm using Security Spy for about a year now. I'm also using Indigo from perceptive automation. I had to separate the mac mini, for indigo and security spy.

Indigo and the apple server app provides an excellent remote management option.

Security Spy provides the option to access remote camera's, but viewing back recordings isn't possible (or I do something wrong) (on a remote mac on the same network).

It's possible by a browser, but using the native app should be great.

Guarding a dwelling perimeter, I'm running motion detection on two cameras, one camera triggers the other on detected motion and vice versa. The camera that detects motion runs an Actions script to trigger Home Automation (using an XTension alarm Unit) that motion is detected and triggers via the camera setting its adjacent camera(s).

Unfortunately, the camera that is triggered by an other one's motion, also runs the same Actions script, as if it itself has detected motion. Therefore, two Home Automation alarm Units trigger and I'm not able to tell which camera was motion triggered.

(In XTension one can block unit ON scripts for a set amount of time. My first attempt was to let camera one ON script block camera two ON script for a while, as triggers during blockage are skipped, not delayed. Action reporting is so fast however that blocking occurs only áfter the second camera has triggered the second unit. Thus I can't prevent motion triggering being reported by both cameras.)

Complicating factor may be that the second camera is already triggered by the first camera and then itself detects motion. In that case, I like to signal that motion as motion detection (and extend the recording time of the first camera by triggering it).

How can I discriminate in an Actions Script the 'Trigged By Motion' from the 'Triggering By Other Camera'?

Had a frustrating time yesterday trying to use the API docs at https://www.bensoftware.com/securityspy/web-server-spec.html to enable cameras from the command-line. It seems the API has changed and the docs are out of date.

I did find an open source project with with some hints as to the V5 API and got as far as:

curl --insecure "https://admin:mypassword@192.168.0.60:8080/++ssSetSchedule?cameraNum=-1&mode=A&id=1"

That gets an "OK" response but has no effect. I'm trying to set all cameras to Armed 24/7 on C, M & A each morning in case I've disabled them and forgotten.

Cheers,
