NTP setup document from Ben

edited July 2020 in SecuritySpy
Hi Ben,

Seeing that Apple have changed NTP delivery - is the current document invalid?

Time sync: ntpd has been replaced by timed: not the old school unix one, but a new apple invention.

Have linked the timed Man page for ya:

https://www.unix.com/man-page/mojave/8/timed/

Thanks

Jeff

  • Hi Jeff, I'm not too familiar with timed, but it doesn't seem to be a NTP time server that can be used with IP cameras - the man page talks about synchronising a group of machines on a network together to the same time, not strictly a server/client arrangement, and no mention of a server implementation of the NTP protocol. I believe the OpenNTPD setup described in our blog post Running an NTP Time Server on your Mac is still the best way to do it.
  • Hi Ben - I have installed as per documents - I am running Catalina 10.15.6.
When first installed appears ok but then after a while it stops. especially after a restart of the mac mini.

    % sntp 192.168.*.*

192.168.1.*.* no UCST response after 5 seconds
