Setting Up Network Devices

Before a network device such as an IP camera can be used with your Mac, you will need to give it a fixed IP address on your network. The steps to do this are below, but first a few simple networking concepts:

IP address

Each device connected to a network is given a unique identifier, known as an IP address. An IP address consists of four numbers separated by dots, for example 192.168.1.100.

Subnet

Each local network operates on a particular subnet, which defines the scope of the network; it is only possible for a device to directly communicate with other devices that are on the same subnet. The details aren't important except that the subnet is typically defined as the first three numbers of the IP address, which corresponds to a "subnet mask" of 255.255.255.0.

DHCP

This is a technology, built into all routers, that automatically assigns IP address to network devices. This makes setup easy, however it does mean that the IP addresses of the devices may change from time to time. This is unsuitable for any device that acts as a server (such as a network camera).

Note that any manual address you assign to a device should be outside the range of addresses that the router uses for DHCP, to avoid any conflict. Unfortunately, routers vary in what ranges they use, but if you assign manual addresses in the range 200-250, this is normally quite safe. It's a good idea to look for this setting in your router so that you know which addresses are safe to use for your manual assignments.

Method 1: Cameras set to use DHCP (try this first)

Download and open our Network Device Finder utility, and click the Start button - it will find a display all network devices that it finds:

The menu at the top of the window shows your subnet (in this case 192.168.1), so your IP assignments must start with these three numbers. If you see your device listed, then simply double-click on it and it will open in a web browser. Log in to the device and set its IP details accordingly - for example you could give your device the address 192.168.1.252. You only need to specify an IP address and subnet mask; nothing else. For example, here is the IP settings page from an Axis network camera:

Method 2: Cameras set to fixed IP addresses

Sometimes, cameras are set to used fixed IP addresses by default, and when these IP addresses are not on your subnet, this makes the setup a little more difficult. Firstly, consult the camera's user manual to see what its default IP address is - here we will use the example of a camera with a fixed IP address of 10.0.0.1. Firstly, go to System Preferences and click on Network:

Make a note or take a screenshot of your current settings, because you will need to restore them after this setup procedure.

Set the "Configure IPv4" setting to "Manually", enter an IP address on the same subnet as your camera (for example 10.0.0.2), enter the subnet mask 255.255.255.0, then click Apply (if your Mac is using a WiFi connection, you will need to click the Advanced button to gain access to these settings). You will then be able to open a web browser and connect to the camera at 10.0.0.1, and set it to use an address on the correct subnet (such as 192.168.1.252). After you have done this, reset your Mac's network settings to their previous values.
